I love NY

My favorite part of coming home to visit. You can't get anything like this back at Bragg.

The cool thing about horses...

...is they're kind of like people.

I'm sure all of y'all have seen the commercials for ancestry.com where you can research your family tree back generations and generations. Well, if you've got a fancy schmancy horse, you can do that too.

(Our friend Lance riding Illusion last winter. She's so pretty with a rider)

I belong to a group on facebook for milspouses who own horses. There aren't too many of us in it (around 50), but it's a great forum for advice. There are some really knowledgeable ladies on there. I've never been too concerned with Illusions lineage, even though we were told she came from champion bloodlines (for dressage) when we picked her up at the rescue for the whopping price of $0. Well, curiosity got the best of me, and Illusion is apparently a pretty big deal for those that are into the whole dressage/hunter type competitions (aka they do their manes all silly, dress them up pretty, and jump them over things. lol)

(her lineage)

She's the proud momma of SEVEN offspring that sold for thousands of dollars each.

(Her "babies")

(Some of her "grandbabies")

Her sire (father), Ceylon 454, is apparently a pretty popular stud in the Swedish Warmblood circles. If you google him, you'll find out his little swimmers were a prized commodity. lol.

I've even found pictures of some of the sires in her bloodlines that run back to the early 1900's/mid-to-late 1800's. It was actually pretty nifty.

A Sorry Secret Santa

I know Christmas is supposed to be about the spirit of giving, but getting an OPEN box of pasta from my secret Santa made me a little Grinchy!

The maximum is $2 per day and an unopened box is well under that.

Friday Fill In #66

I havent participated in one of these in forever (like since week #52) but I'm home alone while the hubs is out hunting, and enjoying watching My Best Friends Wedding while stalking Blogger, Facebook, & Pinterest, and I figured, why not?

1. My favorite song of the season is  Totally Cheesy-but I love 'N SYNC's Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays & Britney Spears' Santa Can You Hear Me
2. Anyone who faces extreme hardship and does something great is someone who inspires me because I havent had to face too many challenges in my life, and it's always good to keep things in perspective.
3. If I had $100,000 to give to a charity, I’d give it to Tia & her pitbull rescue at Villalobos for sure!! Pitbulls & Parolees is one of my favorite shows
4. If I had a theme party, I’d make it black & white... keep it classy.
5. If I had one wish for my kids/future kids/some young person I care about, it would be that they actual have a planet to live on. It really aggravates me that people don't take care of the planet, passing it off as future generations problems.
Join Wife of a Sailor to participate in the fun :)

I take NO credit for this crafty cuteness!

We buddy read with some adorable little kinderbabes and here are the oh-so-cute things they did for Christmas this year.
Tiles with finger print trees & reindeer sweatshirts!

What's wrong with our society!

Too many people who are looking for a handout... what happened to the people who were too proud to accept help? Seems like nowadays there are way too many people who feel entitled, and always wanting to know what the government is going to give them. How about you earn it yourself?!

The hubster is horrible about ruining my headbands. Between him & the puppy, I think I only have one left that doesn't hurt my head.

My husband & I have traded cars to save some extra cash to travel home for Christmas. Since I only travel around 20 miles to work round trip, I can go almost all month on one tank of gas (which is around $35 in my carolla). On the other hand, Post is a lot further for the hubster, plus once he's there it's back & forth to the btry, motor pool, battalion, etc. In his Tundra he'll end up spending close to $400 a month in gas. Typical men & their big boy toys! Lol.

This morning when I got in my car I found my favorite headband smashed & covered in dirt from him stepping all over it last week. Wahhhh!

Guess this kid is either going to have to buy some new headbands or make some... Keep your eyes peeled for some crafty headband posts in the near future!

Something to think about this Christmas

I DO NOT know how factual this information is, as I received it in an email from my mom, and I'm too lazy to research it for myself right now. I know a lot of people who request people make charitable donations instead of gifts at the holidays, and its something to think about before you mail off your check.

I always say that if my husband or I wins the lottery for the big bucks, then I want to donate $1,000,000 to Tia (from pitbulls and parolees) for her pitbull rescue, Vialobos. Maybe one day, if North Carolina ever decides to start giving teachers their raises like they used to when I started, I'll be able to send some money her way. She is by far my favorite non-profit. What about y'all? Do any of y'all donate to charities?

Christmas is coming.  Think about these.
As you open your pockets for the next natural disaster, please keep these facts in mind:
The American Red Cross President and CEO Marsha J. Evans salary for the year was $651,957 plus expenses

The United Way President Brian Gallagher receives a$375,000 base salary along with numerous expense benefits.

UNICEF CEO Caryl M. Stern receives $1,200,000 per year (100k per month) plus all expenses including a ROLLS ROYCE . Less than 5 cents of your donated dollar goes to the cause.

The Salvation Army's Commissioner Todd Bassett receives a small salary of only $13,000 per year (plus housing) for managing this $2 billion dollar organization. 96 percent of donated dollars go to the cause.
The American Legion National Commander receives a$0.00 zero salary. Your donations go to help Veterans and their families and youth!
The Veterans of Foreign Wars National Commander receives a $0.00 zero salary. Your donations go to help Veterans and their
families and youth!
The Disabled American Veterans National Commander receives a $0.00 zero salary. Your donations go to help Veterans and their families and youth!
The Military Order of Purple Hearts National Commander receives a $0.00 zero salary. Your donations go to help Veterans and their families and youth!
The Vietnam Veterans Association National Commander receives a $0.00 zero salary. Your donations go to help Veterans and their families and youth!

Again... Like I said, I DID NOT verify these salaries... they came to me in an email... but its something to think about before you give money to a charity... Where is your money actually going?

Adoption Bans

Adoption bans are running ramped through North Carolina. The county that I live in thankfully is really lax about animal control, and doesnt participate in the adoption bans, but Cumberland County, just one county over, was considering automatic euthanization for any dog deemed a "bully breed"

Meaning all pitbulls, German shepherds, rottweilers, and the like would be automatically euthanized within 3 days of being brought to the shelter, with no chance for adoption.

Thankfully, they were met with 18,000 emails, and 100 strong crowd. As a compromise, the Animal Control Board has decided to make adopting these banned breeds harder (ie a background check) and that way hopefully preventing them from being adopted for dog fighting, and any other forms of animal cruelty. (more HERE)

It absolutely floors me that people can be so discriminatory towards a helpless animal. I have never met a mean pittbull, GSD, or rottweiler. Ever.

I don't know how many times I can say that my pitbulls are the sweetest dogs on the planet. They are cuddly, loving, and crave affection from people. As I type this I have one curled up at my feet. HOWEVER, my dachshund is MEAN. She absolutely does not like meeting new people. She has nipped at repair men & little children.

They say the most aggressive dogs are chihuahuas, dachshunds, jack russels, cocker spaniels & chows. In that order. No mention of any of the so called "bully breeds" Why? Because the media likes to highlight any wrong-doing of these so call evil dogs.

How can anyone not love these squishy little faces?!

Cheapo breakfast!

I had seen a few people making breakfast sandwiches for super cheap. I made 6 for about the price of 2 egg mcmuffins from McDs.

I used 4 eggs with a little milk to fill up 6 sections on a muffin tray. I saw some people who used scrambled, but this way seemed way less messy, and it was! I also split my cheese slices in half bc I didn't need them super cheesy.

4 eggs-$0.63
6 English muffins-$1.08
6 slices of shaved honey ham-$0.12
3 slices of cheese-$0.34

Total for 6 sandwiches-$2.25
Price per sandwich-$0.38

Not something I plan on eating every morning, but the great thing about these is they can be frozen.

At our local grocery store they sell Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwiches for $4-$5 for 4 sandwiches. No thanks!

For my fellow teachers...

"If a doctor, lawyer, or dentist had 40 people in his office at one time, all of whom had different needs, and some who didn't want to be there and were causing trouble, and the doctor, lawyer, or dentist, without assistance, had to treat them all with professional excellence for nine months, then he might have some conception of the classroom teacher's job."

Is it Christmas break yet?!

Campbell University

A big thanks to our local university for a free field trip. They did some math & geography with the kiddos based on the basketball program and tried to motivate them to want to go to college... And let me tell ya, these kiddos need some SERIOUS motivation!

You might be a redneck if...

I think we've got enough hay for the winter now ;)

While I wait for it to be time to put the turkey in...

I got this from Whitney @ Everything Happens for a Reason, who got it from Julie... etc. lol... so if you're a milspouse, feel free to join in the fun, and let me know so I can check out your answers.

1. How did you and your spouse meet?
At a bar called "The Ugly Stick Saloon" where "the girls dance on the bar"... slightly embarrassing, but hey, it's the truth. lol. I happened to notice he was the only good looking guy that happened to be there that night (might have had something to do with the fact that he was wearing a stetson). That was back in May 2009, and the rest is history.

2. How old were you when you two met?
I was 23, he was 25
3. How long have you been together?
since May '09

4. Where are you and your spouse originally from?
He's from MI, and I'm from NY. However, both of us are pure country, and are convinced we were supposed to be born in the South.

5. How did you feel about him joining the military?
He was already in the military

6. Where did your spouse go to Basic Training?
Fort Sill

7. Has your spouse ever been deployed?
Once to Korea, and once to Iraq... in the spring its off to the 'Stan.

8. Ever been to his promotion ceremony?
Yep! They actually had to wait on me & another wife. lol. Thankfully 1SGT likes me :)

9. How long have you been a military wife?
Long enough for my dependent ID to say he's an E-3, and my husbands to say E-5. lol

10. Did you marry him before or after he joined?

11. How did your husband propose?
He didn't really... I got gypped. lol.
12. Where did you get married?
 At the court house

13. How old were you two when you got married?
23? 24? Ha, I never remember how old I am.

14. Did he wear his uniform on his wedding day?
Nope... jeans, a button up, and that damn stetson ;)

15. Where are you and your spouse currently stationed?
We're at Bragg

16. Do you live on base?
Nope. We have pitbulls, so we will never live on post

17. How long were you married when you had to go through your first separation?
He deployed a few months after we got together

18. What is your favorite base so far?
We've only been here... but I don't think Bragg is as bad as people make it out to be if you stay in the right areas

19. Do you think your spouse looks good in his uniform?
Duh! Aside from the fact that he's airborne and has to tuck his pants into his jump boots... Whose idea was that one?!

20. Do you think military life is more advanced than civilian life?
 More advanced as in... ?

21. Do you like the benefits you receive as a military dependent?
Sometimes... I rarely use my military ID for anything other than getting on Post, and saving a few bucks at the movies

22. Do you have a lot of military wife friends?
Yes & no... a lot of them are from work, so they're more teacher friends... I only have one close friend whose strictly a milspouse friend (In real life. lol)
23. What is the hardest part of the military life?
Never knowing... especially with this upcoming deployment. First he was set to leave in April/May... then Feb... now its summer... but I'm sure it will change 100 more times before he actually leaves

24. Do you own military wife stuff?

25. Do you support your spouse as a member of the military?

Super Easy Dinner

-Dice chicken and saute in a pan w/EVOO until mostly cooked
-At the same time, boil pasta (any type will do) and broccoli
-In an oven-safe casserole dish mix 1 can cream of broc soup, 1 can of milk, a few squirts of yellow mustard, and a few dallops of Greek yogurt (you can also use mayo... thats what my mom used growing up, but now with Greek yogurt being so popular, its an easy healthier substitution)
-Stir in chicken, broccoli and pasta
-Top with shredded motz cheese
-Heat on 350 until cheese is melted

Enjoy :)

Will you stop?

I saw this floating around facebook. I don't eat McDonalds often. If I'm going to get fast food, I normally try and talk the hubs into subway or quiznos. Every once in a while, he'll want McDonalds. And I don't forsee myself refraining from the occasional mcnugget based on this picture, especially if I'm only eating it a few times a year.

It seems like now-a-days EVERYTHING seems to cause cancer, or some sort of health ailment. If I spent my whole life wondering what was going to happen to me before I put something in my mouth, I would starve to death!

Don't eat meat with growth hormones or you'll grow an extra appendage, or maybe become a harry wildebeest... Don't eat vegetables out of a can or you'll get botchulism... Don't eat fish or you'll get mercury poisoning... and now: Don't eat McDonalds or you'll get cancer...

It all makes my head hurt, and I honestly don't care all that much. I think as long as you eat EVERYTHING in moderation, a little of something isn't going to kill you... or that's what I'm going to tell myself :)

Is there anything y'all don't eat because of something you've read?

I'll admit...

I saw Breaking Dawn pt 1 last night AND I liked it! ha!

Pregnancy fail

(via google images)

I've seen these images floating around facebook like wildfire (mostly from my non-military affiliated friends) and people think its funny, so they keep sharing it.

It's absolutely HORRIFYING for poor Kendra. The caption on the photos both list that her husband was gone on a 12-month deployment, which is what is getting people all-a-twitter. People with no military affiliation haven't heard of a little thing called R&R... aka mid-tour leave. So they see this poor girl as a whore who is now very pregnant even though her husband has been away. None of these people sharing this photo have taken into consideration that the baby was conceived during the tour, or possibly even by the use of fertility treatments. Get on any military wife forum online and I bet you can find HUNDREDS, possible THOUSANDS of women who have conceived babies on their husband's mid-tour leave.

I came across THIS link in which they spoke with Kendra about how horrible it's been for her. Her husband's homecoming, which is something she should be remembering as one of the happiest days of her lives, has been tainted all because a photographer who saw a cute photo-op happened to catch something that quick-to-judge people had to ruin for her.

Seriously people?! She has even gone as far as getting a paternity test done to prove to the skeptics that babies are conceived on R&R. That is something she never should have had to put her family through.

(For the record: Although I don't particularly care for her choice of homecoming outfits for myself, I think she looks adorable)

All grown up... or not?!

Back in April I posted THIS blog about getting a new addition to our family. A 13 week old terror with 4 legs whose options were us or pound. Obviously, we took the little stinker in. Back then he weighed in at about 25lbs. Now the "little" porker tips the scales at over 60lbs... and guess what?! He's only 9 months old! Yep, this little pupper still possibly has some growing to do.

Be sure to go back to the post of Rebel's first appearance and check out how little he looks next to Dixie, our 40lb female pitbull... Then come back and see what a beast he's become!

He may be scary because of the reputation pitbulls have, but I'll be the first to tell you that you needn't worry unless you are a bird, mouse, or other small furry creature. They absolutely LOVE people. It's kind of pathetic. If you dont let them sit next to you on the couch they will sit there and look at you in the most pathetic way and wimper. Our other two dogs don't do that. Pitbulls = needy, cuddle bugs!!

She may be littler, but she kicks his butt!

Rebel (9mo) & Dixie (2.5yrs)

Rebel, Ty & Dixie

They look like they're up to no good

They're ridiculously fast

She looks so little!

I'm so glad he didnt grow into his big floppy ears

Miley... no, that's not snow. It's the remains of many dead stuffed animals. RIP

My big man

She has no intention of joining in the playing

Mmm sticks

Itchy Itchy Itchy

I love that he hops. I has to be part bunny!

They now go in size order, backwards! Miley is the oldest, then Dixie, Ty & Rebel.
